What you should know about PATCHAM PLACE B&B

Bed and Breakfast in Clarens

Patcham Place is situated in the heart of the delightful mountain village of Clarens in the Eastern Free State. Day trip to a stunning medieval style Castle perched high on the rocks, complete with period furniture, artwork and stunning 360 degree views over the Maluti Mountains and part of the Eastern Free State. The two Oak Trees which were planted, one for each country, are still thriving in the garden today. We also make a stop at another historical site, where the Boers surrendered to the British forces and a small plaque marks the place where this happened. All of this and a stunning scenic drive along part of the Maluti Route have the makings of a perfect tour. Come with us and visit the beautiful Golden Gate National Park. We take time to look for Game off the beaten track, enjoy a visit to the Basotho Village which offers the visitor a glimpse of the Basotho way of life. Shorter activities which we are able to arrange are: Quad rides in the mountains with local guide which is a historical ride, visiting the old Basotho battle fields and other historical sites. As with all outdoor activities, the above are all weather dependent. We are able to offer the visitor a full day trip into Lesotho (passports please!) Alternatively we can arrange a walking visit to one of the local villages to meet the locals and peep inside the little homes. Enjoy stunning scenery once we reach the mountains of Lesotho. Glimpses of the Dam will be seen as we progress along the mountain passes, reaching an altitude of 3090 metres in places. This is a guided tour arranged via the Highlands Water Project team and only available to us on week-ends. Photo stops on the way home will be made as we make our way down the passes. We can adapt this to be a full day or a half day visit depending on guest’s preferences. Travel through tiny villages to arrive at Liphofung Cave where you will be taken on a guided tour of the Cave, which is a huge sandstone overhang, once used by the much revered King Mashoeshoe when he was travelling in the area to meet his people of this region. View the San paintings from ancient times, etched onto the walls and hear the information which the guide will impart about the origin of the paintings. Enjoy a visit to the tiny museum where the ancient tools are kept, and marvel at how such beautiful paintings were made from such simple tools. On a full day tour, we now depart for Lesotho’s National Park where our venue nestles at the foot of the mighty Malutis. Here we enjoy a three course luncheon in the most beautiful surroundings, time for a walk after lunch which offers the visitor the opportunity to take photos of the scenery, then on to a walking tour with a local guide into one of the small Basotho villages. Here you may meet some of the local people, take a look inside their little homes and even taste some of their traditional food and drink. Time to head back to the border now after an interesting and beautiful visit to Lesotho. We also arrange local tours for such guests who do not necessarily have their own transport, or prefer to utilise Maluti Tours who know the area, rather than missing some of the best parts of this stunning part of the Eastern Free State.
